Beware of Job Offers from WhatsApp & Telegram under the #HelloYes name. This is a scam.
A Growing Threat
The rise of work-from-home opportunities has created a golden opportunity for scammers to exploit unsuspecting individuals looking for extra income. A new scam is circulating on WhatsApp and Telegram, promising easy money for simple online tasks. Be aware this is a well-organised scam designed to steal your money and/or personal information. For context, #HelloYes will never send unsolicited messages via WhatsApp/Telegram.
How the Scam Works
The scammers reach out to potential victims via WhatsApp and Telegram, claiming to offer a seemingly legitimate work-from-home opportunity. The job sounds simple: perform online tasks such as liking YouTube videos, following social media accounts, or engaging with WhatsApp channels. For each task, they promise to pay a fee, making it seem like an easy way to earn money quickly.
Red Flags to Watch Out For
- Too Good to Be True Offers – If someone offers easy money for little effort, be skeptical.
- Upfront Payments – Legitimate jobs do not require an upfront fee to start working.
- Anonymous or Unverified Employers – Scammers often use fake profiles and avoid sharing company details.
- Pressure Tactics – They will rush you to either make payments or provide personal details.
- Payment via Untraceable Methods – Be cautious if they ask for payments through eWallet or unregulated platforms.
How to Protect Yourself
- Ignore & Block – Do not engage with suspicious messages. Block the numbers immediately.
- Verify the Job Offers – Research any company, before accepting online work opportunities.
- Report Scam to Authorities – Notify the South African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) – 011 867 2234 for assistance, and/or the police to help warn others.
- Educate Others – Share this information with friends and family to prevent them from falling victim.
- Scammers are constantly evolving, preying on people looking for financial opportunities. Stay vigilant and always verify any job offers you receive on WhatsApp or Telegram. If an opportunity seems too good to be true, it probably is.
